We’ve spoken about the risk of heart disease, especially cases of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) at length previously – and it’s with good reason.

In the last 15 years, Ischaemic (meaning “reduced blood supply”) heart disease and stroke have held the top spot for leading causes of death, with a combined total of 15.2 million.

When we are talking about defibrillators we really are talking about life and death, which is why it’s so important to get the right one.

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is the world’s biggest killer. In the UK alone it affects 250,000 adults every year and there is no cure and CPR won’t fix it.

You have to deliver a shock to the heart to restore its natural rhythm – and with every minute that passes without a shock from a defibrillator, survival rates drop by 10%.

Leisure bosses failed to use defibrillator in tragic death of young footballer

It emerged last week that an on-site defibrillator was available when talented young footballer Jamie Skinner collapsed, but was not used by two trained members of staff at the Edinburgh venue.

Talented Jamie, 13, collapsed on the pitch five minutes into the second half in his debut for Tynecastle FC under-14s on December 22nd.
